The experiences of Africans sold into slavery were the focus of drama workshops for pupils led by the Lawrence Batley Theatre.

Year seven pupils at Westborough High School joined professionals for the sessions as part of their studies on the history and culture of Africa.

Extended learning co-ordinator Gayna Goalby said: “They looked at what it was like in an African village, what is was like to be transported on a ship and the kind of things they would have to do.

“They were very practical workshops where they were not just talking, but acting it out.”

The theatre is working with Westborough and other schools in the area as part of a two-year community programme.
