Crowds in vintage form at retro town centre event

Hundreds of people turned out for a celebration of all things vintage in Dewsbury.

The Market Place was transformed last Saturday into a 1950s-themed event with live swing bands, stalls selling retro gifts and visitors clad in period clothing.

Dewsbury West’s Coun Paul Kane, who organised the event, said it was “an extremely good send-off” as the final function he attended as the Mayor of Kirklees.

He appeared at the event to read a poem before white doves were released to symbolise peace.

The poem included the lines: “Everyone is equal no matter who we meet, Hold your head high, be proud, walking in the street, We all entered this wonderful world, with such purity and should all live here in peace, love and unity.”

Of releasing the doves, Coun Kane said: “That was unbelievable. That was about bringing communities together.”

He added that the town centre’s traders enjoyed increased footfall on the day.

“I would like to thank everybody that participated,”he said.

Bands such as Lula and the Bebops, Backstep Boogie Club and Songsational impressed crowds during the event.

The Yorkshire Thoroughbred Car Club displayed its period motors and visitors were able to eat at the American School Bus Diner, which served traditional food from the USA.
