Bogus workmen fleece Dewsbury man of nearly £17,000

Bogus workmen fleeced a Dewsbury homeowner of nearly £17,000 during a month-long deception.

The incidents took place between March 23 and April 14, when the victim was approached by two suspects about some building work on his roof.

The culprits told the homeowner that they were carrying out work on other homes on the street, Morton Grove, in Thornhill Lees.

Over a month, the suspects asked the victim for thousand of pounds to complete the work, totalling at £16,960.

The first suspect is described as a white man, big build, 5ft 6in, with a Yorkshire accent and was wearing a woolly hat.

The second man is described as white, slim, around 23 to 24-years-old, missing upper teeth with long sandy-coloured hair.

Detective Constable Andy Clayton, of Huddersfield CID, said: “We are appealing for information about these two suspects who have targeted this victim and taken a lot of money.

“We have advised the victim and his neighbours to be mindful when opening the door to strangers and to call the police if approached.

“We would advise people to always check the identification of callers and to keep the door locked when doing so.

“Genuine callers will not mind waiting while you check their authenticity.

“If you are still not sure, keep the door locked and contact the police on 101.

“Anyone who has any information about these suspects or has been approached by them is asked to contact myself at Huddersfield CID via 101 quoting reference 13160165746.”
