youngsters from North Kirklees have been commended for their work at raising awareness of road safety at an awards ceremony in Huddersfield.

The kids, who are members of the Kirklees Road Safety Champions and who last year won West Yorkshire Police’s i11 project, picked up a Commended Certificate from the charity National Crimebeat.

Tony Grant, High Sheriff of West Yorkshire in 2011-12, presented the award. He said: “I’m delighted to be able to award the group this Commended Certificate.

“Their project was very inspiring – winning first prize in our ‘i11’ project – and I believe will really help save lives on the roads.

“The group puts a great deal of effort into the project, contributing over 500 volunteer hours between them, and thoroughly deserves this national recognition.

“It’s fantastic to see young people working together and giving something back to the community, and I congratulate them on their achievement.”

The 11 youngsters, aged between 11 and 18, took part in the road safety project last year, when they created YouTube and Facebook clips, a safety pack and a postcard, aimed at making people consider the distractions and dangers involved when crossing roads.

The material they produced was shown and issued to pupils in schools all over Kirklees.
