Heckmondwike Salvation Army band in need of some festive cheer

There aren't many people who haven't heard a Salvation Army brass band at Christmas, whether out and about or at a local carol service.

To many people it isn’t Christmas until they’ve heard the famous music play.

However, this year the Heckmondwike Salvation Army admit they are going to struggle to perform.

It comes after several key members of the band have moved to different areas of the country for work and university.

Lieutenant Yong-Geun Lee, who took over as church leader in Heckmondwike in July, said: “A Salvation Army band is almost as much a part of a traditional English Christmas as mince pies and turkey.

“But we really need some help this year so that we can perform at events in the area and visit people who are unable to come out to see us.

“We would love to hear from anyone young or old, skilled or still learning, to get in touch and give us a helping hand.”

Anyone who is interested in joining the band or helping out, is invited to a series of upcoming open evenings.

They take place on Tuesday, October 25, Tuesday, November 8 and Tuesday, November 22 at the Salvation Army’s base on Barrack Street.

All sessions begin at 9pm.

Lieutenant Yong-Geun Lee added: “Over the Christmas period we have several bookings already and would appreciate any offers of help for any or all of the events.”
