Healthier takeaways are on the menu

Brits are eating more fast food than ever, spending on average £1,320 a year on fast food – the equivalent of 12 takeaways each every month.

But while they are often cheap, convenient and satisfying, they are not always a healthy option.

Unlike supermarket food, takeaways have no labelling showing how much fat, salt, sugar and calories they contain, and exceeding daily maximum amounts can lead to health problems such as heart disease and diabetes.

Now Kirklees Council’s Food Safety Team is working with takeaway owners to help tackle this issue by providing a free ‘takeaway master class’ which will provide training around healthy eating messages and practices. Takeaway owners across Kirklees will be encouraged to follow simple steps to produce healthier menu options without compromising on taste.

Training will cover food preparation habits, food ingredients used and cooking techniques. Guest speaker Mark Drummond from the Fish Fryers Federation will also provide advice on healthier frying techniques including the use of different oils to maintain oil quality, taste and also save money.

The training will only be offered to takeaways with a hygiene rating of three or more.

The master classes will be in Huddersfield Town Hall on January 8 (9.30am-12.3pm) and 28 (12.30am-3.30pm), and Dewsbury Town Hall on January 27 (10am-1pm).
