AN ARTS group is throwing its doors open to the community after a major expansion.

Dewsbury Arts Group wants others to benefit from new facilities added to its Lower Peel Street home.

The £160,000 project has given the group two new rehearsals rooms and more space to store its vast collection of scenery, props and costumes.

Now it hopes theatre groups, artists and others will be able to host their own rehearsals, meetings and workshops there.

Chairman David Woods MBE said: “We found that if we put on a play, we couldn’t use anything else in the rest of the building at the same time.

“The extra space means that while we’re performing Hobson’s Choice next week, we’ll still be able to run the youth classes and life drawing.”

The group also hopes to attract more touring theatre companies now that access to the stage has been improved.

Mr Wood said: “We would like to think this is part of the town’s regeneration programme. We want people to see this as Dewsbury’s Artspace.

“If anyone thinks we may have a space they can use, we’d like them to come and look round.”
