People in Kirklees voted to leave the EU with a majority of more than 20,000.

Following a turnout of 70.81 per cent in the district, 118,759 people voted to leave the European Union, while 98,485 wanted to remain.

Nationally, 51.9 per cent voted to leave the EU and 48.1 per cent were for Remain.

That means the UK is set leave the European Union - a result which has led to Prime Minister David Cameron’s resignation.

He will step down by October after campaigning for the UK to stay in the EU.

Following the result, the pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985 as financial markets reacted to the results.

The Kirklees count last night at Cathedral House in Huddersfield paused for a minute silence at 11.30pm in memory of Jo Cox MP.
