A DEWSBURY bingo hall is backing a member of staff as he prepares for his first half marathon.

Mecca Bingo manager David Walmsley plans to take on Newcastle’s Great North Run this September to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Since deciding to take part in May, David has been preparing for the challenge ahead.

“It will be a first for me, as I’m not a very sporty person,” he said. “I am running about two times a week for four miles. The closer I get to the race, the more I will up my training.”

David hopes to raise at least £500 for the charity with the support of friends, family, customers and colleagues.

He said: “There have been a few jokes flying around from other members of staff, but I reckon a few of them should be up there to support me on the day.

“I’m sure that, one way or the other, I will be able to finish the race – even if I have to be dragged over the finish line!”
