GARY Sykes and his loyal band of supporters are devastated after the Dewsbury star’s world title fight in Las Vegas was called off yesterday.
The 28-year-old boxer was due to meet world number one super featherweight Adrien Broner at the Mandalay Bay Hotel, in Vegas, next Saturday on the undercard to the much-anticipated world title fight between Bolton’s Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson.
However, American world light welterweight champion Peterson provided a positive drugs test and was unable to get a licence to fight, so US promoters Golden Boy decided to cancel the entire show.
Around 30 Sykes supporters had booked flights and hotels to be in Las Vegas and now face the prospect of being hundreds of pounds out of pocket.
The Dewsbury Moor star is gutted at having his shot at the world title ripped from his grasp, just days before he was due to fly to America.
Despite his huge disappointment, Gary was still thinking of his fans. He said: “I’m so sorry things have turned out like they have for everyone. It means the world that you were all coming out to support me.”
