THIEVES raided a sheltered housing cottage which had already been damaged by a car crash.
Lead and copper piping was stripped from the Dewsbury Moor property in the wake of a stolen vehicle causing £15,000 of damage.
The BMW, taken by joyriders, hit a wall in Boothroyd Lane and this collapsed into the cottage wrecking a window frame. Burglars later smashed a downstairs window to get into the house, part of Fletcher Cottage, a sheltered scheme for vulnerable or disabled people.
Pipes were taken from every room and even the roof space.
Iris Bettney, a trustee of Fletcher Homes, which runs the complex, said the raid had been ‘a kick in the teeth’.
But she thought the thieves were ‘ingenious’ for using tables and chairs to form a ladder to the roof space.
However, the raid has put back work to get the cottage fit to rent.
