Cooks have a crack at egg-centric world record

IT took two-and-a-half hours to hard boil and weighed in at more than six kilogrammes, but school cooks had cracking good fun with their egg-cellent plan to break a world record.

To celebrate Easter, catering staff at Castle Hall School in Mirfield made an attempt at the world’s biggest scotch egg.

The cooks used an ostrich egg, which is the equivalent of two dozen chicken eggs, and covered it in sausage meat and breadcrumbs.

The final product weighed 6.3kg and staff from GM Catering, who make the school’s dinners, are now waiting to hear from Guinness to find out if their scotch egg is the world’s largest.

The current record was set in London with a snack that weighed 6.2kg. It was made by Clarence Court and Lee Streeton at the Albemarle of Rocco Forte’s Brown’s Hotel in July 2008.

Peter McNulty, from GM Catering, said: “We always do something for Easter to publicise school dinners, and what we were going to do was use an ostrich egg and make a giant omelette.

“Then the idea for a scotch egg came up and it just went from there.”

The cooks also made plenty of regular-sized scotch eggs for pupils and teachers to enjoy.
