BUS services connecting Dewsbury and Mirfield to the rest of the region are under threat.

Metro, which runs public transport in West Yorkshire, is reviewing its bus routes.

It has plans to scrap or scale back services which it says are under-used and Dewsbury’s free town bus is under review.

Under new proposals, the 129 route from Dewsbury to Earlsheaton and Chickenley will be withdrawn altogether.

The 128 service between Dewsbury, Thornhill and Wakefield will be scrapped on Sundays and cancelled at four other times during the week. It will no longer go along Headfield Road in Savile Town.

There will be a reduced evening service on the 202 and 203 routes between Leeds, Dewsbury and Tingley.

The 205 service between Pudsey, Morley, Tingley and Dewsbury will be withdrawn on evening and Sundays, and reduced at other times.

On the 253 route between Wakefield, Dewsbury, Mirfield and Bradford, two poorly used Saturday morning journeys and one late night journey will be ditched.

Poorly used Sunday night services on the 278 route between Dewsbury and Wakefield will be withdrawn and buses between Dewsbury and Thornhill on the 281, 282 and 283 routes will be less frequent.

Evening journeys on the 262 service between Huddersfield, Mirfield and Dewsbury will be kept on a ‘use it or lose it’ basis until July 2013 and the route’s Sunday service will be up for review in April 2014.

A public consultation on the changes, which will be put in place in January 2013, began at Dewsbury bus station on Saturday.

Other drop-in consultation events will be held at Dewsbury and District Hospital on May 29, noon-5pm and Mirfield Library on June 8, 11am-4pm.
