Teenage cricketers, a world class cyclist and a powerlifter in her sixties were winners at an awards night on Friday.

Mirfield Sports Council gave trophies to some of the town’s biggest sporting talents during its annual ceremony.

World-beating powerlifter Susan Hollands was given the Senior Sporting Achievement Award, sponsored by Mirfield Town Council.

She has won trophies at a national and international level, in open age contests and in the over-60s categories.

The Junior Achievement Award, sponsored by the Mirfield Reporter, was won by Jake Womersley.

He has represented his country in cyclo-cross European and world championships, with backing from Mirfield Educational Trust.

Cricket squads came out on top in the team awards, with Moorlands Cricket Club under-15s winning the junior category.

They won the Gordon S Cooper League, losing only one game out of 14 in the season.

The club’s first 11 won the senior team award, after winning the Central Yorkshire League Division One.

Battyeford Sporting Club’s Paul MacDonald was the winner of the Services To Sport Award, sponsored by Mirfield Rotary Club.

As chairman, he has overseen the construction of the new clubhouse at Battyeford and still works as a qualified FA referee.

The ceremony was held at Mirfield Cricket Club in Huddersfield Road and awards were given out by Philip Akroyd and David Sykes from Mirfield Sports Council, the Mayor of Mirfield Coun David Pinder and Paul Cusworth from The Rotary Club.

Speaking about the event at a town council meeting on Tuesday, Coun Pinder said: “There were three people in that room who have all represented Great Britain in the last 12 months, which for a small town, isn’t bad going.”

Mirfield Sports Council has four meetings each year and is always on the lookout for new committee members.
