ROBBERS wielding a truncheon and a claw hammer made off with a handbag after an attack on a Mirfield supermarket.
The two men threatened staff at Lidl last Thursday at 7.45pm just before closing time when most members of staff had gone home.
They tried to get into the stone office, but finding it locked, stole a handbag from the staff room. It contained a Son
y Ericcson and a Nokia mobile phone, £180 cash and four debit cards. Staff were left shocked but unhurt.
One man was about 20, white, 6ft 1ins tall, skinny and wearing a black knitted balaclava, a black, waist-length bomber jacket in a shiny material, blue jeans and black gloves.
He spoke with a local accent and was armed with the hammer which looked old and had a yellow handle.
The second man was white, stocky, in his 20s and 5ft 8ins tall. He wore a dark coat, dark blue jeans and a black knitted and ribbed balaclava. He spoke with a local accent and carried a 2ft extendable black truncheon.
Lidl regional director Tony Parker said: "Unfortunately this is something that happens to all retailers. Our staff are protected by CCTV and we do everything we can to minimise this risk.
"We are working very closely with the police and have been able to give some very good CCTV footage and some very detailed descriptions from the security guards.
"I am very pleased the staff followed company procedures and escaped the building and the security guards did their job and nobody was physically injured.
"This is a distressing incident and we want to make sure staff have time to recover so we have given them some time off."
