MIRFIELD Tennis Club has come to the rescue after local park courts were ruled out of play during Wimbledon.
The club is offering its own courts free to the public until July 12 while the three council courts in Mirfield Memorial Recreation Ground are resurfaced and repainted.

Club chairman Steve Brooke said the plan had been to complete the upgrade on the park courts by the time Wimbledon started but it was still a week to ten days from completion.

He said: "We recognise that everyone wants to play tennis during Wimbledon and it's a great shame the new courts aren't ready. But what we can do is to open up our shale courts to everyone instead.

"We will aim to open our gates by at least 2pm every day and by midday at weekends. No-one will be charged but it would help if each player registers at the clubhouse so that we can ensure a fair turnaround of the courts."

The only time the club courts, in the recreation ground, will be unavailable is Tuesday evenings from 6pm due to Huddersfield League commitments.

A Kirklees Council spokeswoman said the council had hoped to complete the work in time for Wimbledon but that could not be guaranteed.

She said the contractors had worked extremely hard and made excellent progress, but it would be two weeks before the work was completed
