NEW five-a-side pitches have been opened at Wakefield Road playing fields by a Chickenley youth club.
The two pitches with goalposts were set up by the Aliens youth club, based at Chickenley Community Centre, and funded by a £500 grant from the Dewsbury Endowment Trust.

Cathy Scott, manager of the Chickenley Community Centre and co-founder of Aliens, said the idea came from kids who were fed up with having nowhere to play football.

She said: "We don't have any football grounds for our young people to use so we were looking around to find funding to get our own goalposts. We approached Coun Paul Kane who pointed us in the direction of the Dewsbury Endowment Trust.

"We're absolutely delighted now because it's somewhere for them to go and have a kick about. They're not upsetting the neighbours when they are out on the street."

Work is also under way on a skate park on the playing fields – which has been five years in the planning.

The idea was first suggested in 2003 by young skaters who complained to Coun Kane that wherever they tried to skate they got moved on.

Since 2005 funding has been secured but problems settling on a location led to a long wait for the skaters.

Coun Kane said: "Obviously I am happy that everything is coming to fruition. It's been a long time coming through one thing or another and I'd like to have got this started earlier but because we've improved the standards and specifications of the skate park I'm very glad we've been able to start even at this time.

"This has come from listening to the people and what they wanted. It's making Wakefield Road playing fields a first class area for young people. I just hope now that we can get on site quickly."

He added that he hoped the skate park, funded by Dewsbury area committee, Dewsbury Endowment Trust and Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing, would be complete by the end of June.
