LOVERS of local history will enjoy a walk in Crow Nest Park on Sunday afternoon organised by members of Dewsbury Matters.
They will be able to see many of the park's artefacts, including buildings, memorials and statues, and learn something about their fascinating history.
Members will be meeting at 1pm, and the walk will start at 1.30pm – fee for guests is £2 including a 40 page booklet about the park
Visitors will also be able to see the historic greenhouse bequeathed by the Fletcher family. It was here where many types of succulent indoor plants were cultivated.
Head gardener at Crow Nest Park in the 1930s was Peter Cardwell, an expert on chrysanthemums, who won many gold medals at all the major shows in Yorkshire.
He cultivated banana plants which produced large bunches of bananas, some of which were sold in 1940 at a Red Cross Charity Sale.
The bananas sold for 13/10d. each. During the war, bananas were not available, hence the extremely high price.
