LOTS of people will visit Blackpool for a Bank Holiday break this weekend – but how many of them will walk back home?
Well that’s what two dedicated sports fans are doing, to raise funds for Overthorpe Sports Club.

Phil Rayner, 54, and Robin Jowitt, 30, set off from Blackpool at 5am today and are hoping to reach Overthorpe Sports Club by Monday.

Phil said: “We’re aiming for 27 miles a day with a little bit to finish on Monday. After each day, we are just going to drop our hat at the nearest bed and breakfast and stop there for the night.”

The pair have already walked from Thornhill to Hull and from York to Thornhill Cricket Club to raise funds for other causes in previous years, but Phil said this was the last time he would be hiking for charity.

He said: “After this, I’m going to throw my trainers away. I’ve had enough, but Robin might carry on.”

Their 92-mile trek will raise money to help turn a cricket pitch at the sports club into a Unibond-standard football pitch, at a cost of £70,000.

A £20,000 grant has already been secured from Kirklees Council and the club is hoping for a further £20,000 from the Football Association, but they still have a lot more money to raise themselves.

To sponsor the pair, contact Overthorpe Sports Club on 01924 464164.
