DEWSBURY Market is introducing special discounts for organised coach tours.
An official 'greeter' will also be on hand to welcome the coach parties, highlight the town's attractions and get feedback

The 13-week trial will run throughout the summer but could be extended if it proves successful. It has been funded by Dewsbury Market Traders' Association, Kirklees Council and Dewsbury Area Committee, which pledged £1,800 this week.

Coun Eric Firth (Dews East, Lab) said: "I know the initiative taken by the market services and traders to promote the market in other regions has been successful but this is a continuation of that. If it helps the economy of our area, it's money well spent."

Market traders' chairwoman Trish Makepeace said: "Anything that brings in more coaches is not only good for the market but for the whole town."

  • Other funding approved by the committee included: £5,000 for Christmas trees; £7,000 for Christmas lights and switch-on event; £500 for the Rotary Club technology tournament; £1,000 for Dewsbury Ball; £2,950 for Yorkshire Day celebrations; £2,000 to upgrade the road surface of Crow Nest Terrace; £25,000 for Dewsbury Arts Group; £7,818 for examination couches, operators chairs and mobile lamps for Dewsbury Diabetes Centre; £30,000 for a green gym in Thornhill at a site to be decided; £5,500 for Tree Lights 2009 event; £5,055 for Street Action Scout Hill, a project to deal with waste, litter and pests in the area.
