CARERS flocked to Dewsbury Fire Station to be the ones being looked after for the day.
The event was organised by South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust's Carer Support service and charitable trust Making Space to give unpaid carers of adults with mental health problems an opportunity to relax.

They sampled different treatments such as massage, henna painting and manicures and tried new activities such as painting, floristry, tai chi and belly dancing.

A local pharmacist gave free blood pressure and diabetes tests and more than 40 carers attended.

Helen Wain, Carers Development Officer for SWYMHT, said: "As a carer it is easy to neglect your own health and physical and emotional well-being when you are busy caring for someone else and, as such carers can suffer from their own health related illnesses especially stress.

"It's important to give carers opportunities to take time out for themselves and an outlet to share the emotional and often physical impact of being a carer. This is where carer support services can step in with events such as these."

  • If you are a family member, friend or neighbour of an adult with mental health problems who regularly provides care, and want to find out further information about accessing carer support services please contact Helen Wain, Carers Support Service, on 01924 326598.
