A SHAW CROSS landlord has been given the honour of owning the 'pub of the season'.
Ian Mann, the long-standing owner of the Huntsman Inn, on Chidswell Lane, was presented with a certificate by Mike Roebuck, chairman of the Heavy Woollen branch of Camra (Campaign for Real Ale).
The pub, which Ian runs with his family, was awarded the spring title after beating off competition from 200 other pubs in the branch area, which includes Mirfield, Dewsbury, Batley, Birstall and the Spen Valley.
Paul Dixey, secretary of the branch, said: "The pub is surrounded by fields, with a farm to one side, giving this edge-of-town pub a real country feel. A collection of agricultural and sporting memorabilia add interest while you enjoy the excellent beer on offer via the four handpumps."
The beer quality, including the pub's own Chidswell Bitter, has earned the Huntsman Inn the Cask Marque seal of approval and a place in the national 'Good Beer Guide' in most editions since 1996, and was a key consideration in its selection for the award.
And it's not only the beer which earned top marks. Judges were also impressed with the lunches – served noon-2pm, Tuesday to Saturday – which consist, says Ian, of generous portions of simple and traditional tasty dishes prepared from quality ingredients.
