A SENIOR police officer has denied Ahmed Hassan's murder was part of any wider culture of gang violence in Dewsbury.
Speaking outside court, Det Supt Paul Kennedy, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "This one incident was caused by one individual, Brook, who was drunk and who was driven by mindless violence.
"It was a one-off incident and it is not connected to an
y other violence in the Dewsbury area.
"There's no information linking what happened on Dewsbury railway station with any kind of gang violence."
Det Supt Kennedy said Brook's long list of previous convictions made "sad reading".
He said: "Brook was freed from a facility three days prior to this murder.
"It just shows what a dangerous individual he is and that's reflected in the sentence of 14 years."
Det Supt Kennedy said Ahmed was "simply in the wrong place at the wrong time" and that his family were still devastated by their loss.
He said: "We hope the judgement today will assist them in moving on with their lives."
Det Insp Dave Boldison, of British Transport Police, also expressed his sympathy for Ahmed's family.
He said: "This was a shocking incident. Ahmed was enjoying a day out with his friends when he was brutally attacked.
"I can reassure the public that incidents such as this are rare on the railway network, however that does nothing to ease the pain Ahmed's family must be going through and our sympathies remain with them."
