DEWSBURY'S canals and towpaths will be transformed under plans to turn the town's waterways into a tourist destination.
The Dewsbury Waterways Destination Delivery Plan aims to bring visitors to the waterfront area, raise awareness of the canals and preserve their rich heritage.
The three-year plan by British Waterways includes work on towpaths and moorings, landscaping and customer facilities at Savile Town Wharf and a trial of a boat trip service.
It follows consultation with community groups, trade leaders, waterways organisations and local people about their views on the waterways and how it could be improved.
Graham Ramsden, regeneration manager for British Waterways, said: "We're looking at how we can make more use of the wharf and waterways and develop it as a destination in it's own right.
"Working alongside our partners we hope the plan will bring about regeneration in areas around the waterways and encourage local people to explore their local waterway, whether it's for a boating holiday, walking, cycling, canoeing or angling."
The £10,000 plan was funded by Dewsbury Neighbourhoods, a regeneration scheme by Kirklees Council and West Yorkshire Housing Partnership.
It has also given £50,000 to kickstart the planned improvements along the Calder and Hebble Navigation and River Calder.
