Having read with interest that Cllr Auty is due to challenge Mr Griffin for the leadership of the British National Party, I decided to research his surname a little further.
The spelling of Auty has changed over the years. The earliest spelling "Oty and Otty" came from Scandinavia, including Norway when William the Conqueror conquered England in 1066 and the Ottys came to England. The Autys also moved through France where the spelling changed to Auttie, during 1400 - 1500. In the year 1685, the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes drove thousands of Protestants (Huguenots) out of France, many settled in England. The spelling appeared in many ways, mainly because people couldn't spell. Oty, Otty, Auttie, Awty. Auty is spelled differently in England as you change regions.
The earliest record found was in Woodkirk (You may find earlier dates elsewhere for other family lines). The Auty name appears to be concentrated in the Dewsbury area of Yorkshire with the oldest Autie church records found there.
