The members of Batley Gilbert and Sullivan Society have almost completed their preparations for their 65th annual production.

This year’s show is Ruddigore, which has the alternative title The Witch’s Curse.

The society welcomes a new production team for 2013. Musical director Graham Thorne has been associated with the society for many years, mainly as a performer. He has sung with and directed male voice choirs, operatic societies and brass/military bands and is choirmaster at Central Methodist Church in Batley and musical director for St Mary’s Roman Catholic Theatre Group.

Producer Becky Gregson-Flynn has performed for the last 20 years. Having gained a first class honours degree in music and classics from Keele University, she returned home to Huddersfield and was roped into Gilbert and Sullivan, playing the part of Pitti-Sing in The Mikado, and has not looked back since.

The plot of Ruddigore revolves around the Murgatroyds, the bad baronets of Ruddigore, the first of whom had a passion for persecuting witches, one of whom put a curse on the family.

The production will be staged in Batley Town Hall from April 17-20 at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are £12 (concessions £10), £5 for u16s for the matinee. Call 01924 324501 or 01484 223200/222444 or online at www.kirklees.gov.uk/townhalls.
